Integrated Environmental Management Plan: Ngwathe Local Municipality

Natalie was the project leader for the development of this plan. It was necessary to apply the principles of sustainable development. These two words unite both aspects – economic progress and environmental quality – in one vision. A number of challenges faced the municipality and the initial draft needed to be adjusted from one that was more suited to a metropolitan municipality with sufficient resources to something simpler that could still make a significant contribution to the environment but was within the existing budget and available resources. Part of this study was to identify the environmental issues, opportunities and constraints associated with the local municipality. This involved thinking holistically about the environment and analyzing it to identify significant characteristics, issues and problems. The issues were ranked against six criteria in order to determine significance. An implementation plan was compiled highlighting priority and timeframe of each action.
